New Mexico is a film-friendly state where few permits are required. But, as in most states, permits are required for filming on federal lands, state property, state highways and tribal lands. Permits may also be required for filming on some historic sites, city properties, public streets and county roads. Permit information and some contact numbers are contained in this section. In all cases, the Las Cruces Film Commission or the New Mexico Film Office can act as your liaison with the appropriate agencies.
State Highway Permits The New Mexico Highway & Transportation Department allows filming, with permission, on its state highways and, in some cases, the Interstate system. Before any filming begins on or next to the highway, the appropriate right-of-way district highway office must be contacted in advance for the required permit. There is no fee for shooting on a state highway. Liability insurance is required in the amount of at least one million dollars. Additional coverage may be required for hazardous work such as highway stunts. Depending on the complexity of the shoot, traffic control is required for the safety of the public and crew. The New Mexico Highway & Transportation permit requires either State Police officers or the appropriate County Sheriff officers for traffic control. For more information, contact the New Mexico Film Office (505) 827.9810 or the New Mexico Highway and Transportation Department - Traffic Services section. (505) 827-0258. http://nmshtd.state.nm.us
Temporary Food Service Permits Any food service operation not licensed by the State of New Mexico must apply for a temporary Food Service Permit from the NM Environment Department. For more information call the Field Operations Division, (505) 827-1400, ext 1006. www.nmenv.state.nm.us/food
Transportation Permits Any out-of-state production vehicle more than 12,000 pounds gross vehicle weight requires a prepaid permit from the Motor Vehicle Division. The permit covers the highway use tax. Vehicles over 26,000 pounds will also be subject to a fuel tax calculated by the mile. Permits and fees can be paid in advance to the Motor Vehicle Division, Vehicle Service Bureau at (505) 827-1005. Permits may also be obtained at the Ports of Entry, though this method may cause some delays. www.state.nm.us/tax/mvd/mvd_home.html
